It's really important that you are able to say goodbye in a way and at a place that feels right for you and your family. We have organised many different sorts of funerals including ceremonies by the sea, on private land, at wedding venues, barns, natural burials in meadows and woodland as well as more traditional settings such as churches, chapels and crematoriums. We are proud to be able to fulfil special requests, whatever their nature.

Some families prefer a funeral that is a real celebration of life and that their loved one would have really enjoyed, with live music, entertainment or a firework display. Others wish to include family pets, art, or locations that feel special and have a personal meaning.

Simple Kent Funerals is a carbon neutral business

Toby can source environmentally-friendly 'World Fair Trade' coffins and urns made of natural, biodegradable, sustainable and low-carbon materials. These can be made from banana leaf or willow and come in a huge range of colours and designs.

Flowers That Are Home-Grown, Not Flown
We recommend local flower farms whose flowers are sustainable, free from harsh chemicals, have a low carbon footprint as well as being very beautiful.

Solar Power
The office at Applefield Cottage is solar-powered. Toby can also help families offset the carbon emissions from a cremation, plus lots more practical ideas to reduce the impact of a funeral.

Hello, my name's Toby, I'm a funeral director and I'll work personally with you all the way, from our first contact onward.

I'm here to help you celebrate your loved one's life in whatever way you wish. We can organise anything. These are a few of our past arrangements:

"I can’t find words to express the comfort Toby, Simple Kent Funerals, gave me when I embarked upon the first funeral I’d had to plan alone. My sole sibling, Simon, was an eclectic, soulful, human. Disabled, relying on 24hr care, but still one of the most loved people you could imagine. Toby guided me through the whole process, making it bearable and caring, making sure he took as much of the load off my shoulders as I wanted to relinquish. I don’t live in the UK so that made the relationship with Toby even more important.

Simon had many friends, who were working, who wanted to attend, so we opted for a Saturday at Barham Crematorium, where Simon, flanked by his dozen biker friends, made is last journey from home to the chapel. The ceremony was fun, with Karaoke, Magic, Toby talking about Simon in a way that sound like as though he’d spent time with him before he passed, and there were lots of happy singalongs and laughter. Just as Simon had lived. It was live-streamed to all his friends from far and wide who could not attend. We sent him off in style, as he would have wanted, and Toby was the glue who held it all together. Everyone said it was the best funeral they’d ever been to! I cannot recommend Toby enough for whatever you want for your loved one. Simply, fancy, fun, creative, traditional, he can offer it all."

I cannot recommend Toby highly enough. I lost my husband in December 2025, a truly unique, one‑of‑a‑kind man and I wanted his Celebration of Life to reflect everything that made him so special. When I came across Toby, I immediately felt he was the right person to help me create the farewell my husband deserved, and I was absolutely right.

Toby guided me through the entire process with such gentle care and thoughtful attention. He talked me through every option, listened closely to all of my wishes, and ensured that every detail of the afternoon was exactly as I hoped. From the choice of casket and the beautiful flow of the service, to the excellent AV support with a live link for those who couldn’t attend, and finally the perfectly managed toast and departure where we all lined up to raise a glass as my husband was driven away, everything was handled with grace and precision. I could not have imagined a more fitting send‑off.

So many guests told me it was the most memorable and heartfelt Celebration of Life they had ever attended - authentic, warm, and filled with love.

Toby is a true professional, and his kindness and compassion are exceptional. I could not have wished for a more perfect celebrant, and I will always be grateful for what he helped me create.

"Sadly we needed to arrange a funeral for my father but fortunately we had some time to prepare a little for this and we had chosen Simple Kent funerals after calling a few other directors. I had never had to arrange a funeral before so Toby’s knowledge was incredibly valuable.

I don’t think our situation was very straightforward and we didn’t have a great length of time to make arrangements after dad passed but we were so pleased with all the choices we made and the support throughout the whole process. My father never wanted a lot of fuss but the small touches that were added to the day have made such beautiful family memories.

We used the florist recommended by Toby and that was also a seamless process. The flowers were stunningly beautiful too but that’s a different review!
